For those who have been following our blog for a while, you know we are strong supporters of California's proposition 8 and traditional marriage. We believe that marriage is defined between a man and a women. We are grateful that proposition 8 passed in California this past November. The sad news is that proposition 8 is still under attack! Next Thursday, March 5, the California Supreme Court will hear oral arguments to determine whether the sovereign will of the people should be upheld, and whether marriage between only a man and a woman will stand. Here's a quote from an e-mail we got from the chairman of the yes on 8 campaign and ProtectMarriage.com:
"We are declaring this Sunday, March 1, to be a Day of Prayer for Marriage. Proposition 8 was supported by over 7 million voters, and we call on those who support traditional marriage to pray for it to be upheld. Please ask the Lord for wisdom for the Justices of the California Supreme Court. Pray, also, for those who oppose this amendment to our Constitution, that they would understand our motivation is to affirm traditional marriage, not to offend any person or group."

Which form of "traditional marriage" do you support? There are many, you realize. The Mosuo people of China engage in what anthropologists have called "walking marriage" in which women are free to sleep with whomever they like, with children being cared for by the woman's family. The girls of the !Kung San in Botswana typically marry several times before they settle into a final long-term relationship. The Canela consider loss of virginity just one step into marriage for a woman. Your own Bible includes and condones polygamy and concubines in marriage.
Educate yourself. Your claim that "one man, one woman" marriage is the only one that has ever existed and been acceptable is patently false, and your attempt to deny marriage to others is blatant bigotry.
BTW, would you believe people who sought to ban Mormonism on the grounds that they wanted to "protect traditional faith", but didn't hate you or want to offend you? Do you now see why we find you to be disingenuous when you preach the nonsense that you love gay people while you do everything in your power to eradicate our rights?

I realize this is a very sensitive issue and one that people feel very strongly about on both sides. Our concern is that if proposition 8 were to be overruled, the rights of parents who support marriage between one man and one woman would be overruled with it.

Proposition 8 in no way limits what parents can teach their children about their own value systems. It is disingenuous of you to make that claim when the real issue is, you believe that gay people are your moral inferiors and you don't want the state to recognize their relationships because of it. Teach your kids whatever you want, but don't try to impose your religious views on the whole state.

This has been an interesting discussion and a sensitive one as I mentioned earlier. I think we all see that people on both sides of this issue feel that some of their rights are being infringed upon.
